"The Guitar Is A Small Orchestra...

It is polyphonic. Every string is a different color, a different voice."

That was said by the great Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia. Segovia did more than anyone to elevate the guitar to solo concert instrument status.

Roger McGuinn, of the Byrds, paid this tribute to Segovia: "Andres Segovia literally created the genre of classical guitar, which hadn't existed before around 1910. There was flamenco, which he borrowed from, but he actually arranged the works of Mozart and other classical composers for guitar, something that had never been done before...

Segovia's style is not slick or contrived, but it's still very clean and his timing is impeccable...it's got a feeling of casual elegance, as if he's sitting around the house in Spain with a jug of wine, just playing from the heart..."

Segovia evidently wasn't fond of pianos - he is quoted as saying a piano is a monster who screams when you touch its teeth!

Well, I'm not much of a musician - I've dabbled a bit with guitars and also with pianos and I know it's very difficult to make a piano sing - playing even the simplest tune musically is no easy accomplishment.

Guitars, well, guitars are beautiful instruments. A few strains of classical guitar can soothe the nerves, lower your blood pressure, transport you to cool nights in the gardens of Spain.

The classical guitar is arguably the hardest instrument of all - technique-wise - to play really well.

But it's quite easy to learn a few simple chords and even the beginner can get a lot of pleasure strumming along to their favorite songs.
